Green waste

Raked pile of leaves on a green lawn

Green waste is lawn clippings, branches, garden prunings and raw timber offcuts.

Green waste can be taken to our transfer stations, for a fee. The fee is used to mulch the green waste. The mulch is then available free of charge to residents, but we can’t guarantee it is free of weeds or other contaminants.

You are welcome to collect free mulch whenever the transfer stations are open, but it is self-load only.

Treated timber and timber/particle board furniture are not accepted as green waste and will attract a higher fee to dispose of because these materials have to be sent to landfill.

Free Green Waste Weekends 2023

Drop your green waste off for free at the Transfer Stations in Beechworth and Rutherglen on the following dates and times:

  • 1pm-5pm Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 October
  • 1pm-5pm Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October

Please note, residents whose properties are located closer to Towong Shire or City of Wodonga can also drop their green waste off for free at these the transfer stations located in these Shires over these weekends as part of our reciprocal partnership. When you arrive, please show your license or rates notice to indicate to the attendant that you are from Indigo Shire.

This is a great opportunity to clean up your property prior to the fire season starting.

Free garden mulch will also be available for collection from both transfer stations during these weekends to help prepare your gardens for summer.

You don't need a voucher to use this service, and if you need to dispose of green waste outside the free green waste weekends, the waste disposal voucher in your rates notice can be used.

We only accept these types of green waste on free weekends:

  • lawn clippings
  • branches
  • garden prunings.

Treated pine, raw timber off-cuts and wooden furniture are not accepted as green waste, please ensure these items as well as any other waste items aren't mixed with the green waste load.  Contaminated loads can’t be mulched and will go to landfill, and you will be charged the general waste/landfill fee for that volume.

Domestic volumes only are accepted, commercial green waste is not accepted at the free green waste weekends.
