We Don't Need a Map is a bold and provocative essay film by acclaimed Kaytetye filmmaker Warwick Thornton (Samson & Delilah, Sweet Country). The film explores the deeply spiritual meaning of the Southern Cross constellation for Aboriginal people, and questions how this symbol has been claimed, appropriated and contested in Australian culture since colonisation. Funny, poetic and thought-provoking, it's a powerful starting point for conversations about identity, history and reconciliation.

About National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is held every year from 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum, in which more than 90 per cent of Australians voted to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the Census, and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision, which led to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of these lands.

NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in our own communities.

Get involved

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. All In reminds us that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. It asks each of us to step away from the sidelines and take action that creates real change, recognising that the responsibility for reconciliation does not rest with First Nations peoples alone.

Take action this NRW

There are many ways to take part in National Reconciliation Week. Being All In can look different for everyone. You might:

  • Learn more about the history and culture of the Traditional Owners of the land you live and work on
  • Read, watch or listen to stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, filmmakers and creators
  • Attend a local NRW event in your community
  • Have a conversation with family, friends or colleagues about what reconciliation means to you
  • Visit reconciliation.org.au for resources, ideas and inspiration

The 2026 campaign artwork was created by renowned Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist Otis Hope Carey, whose colourful and optimistic design represents people from all walks of life coming together to be 'all in' for change.
