The Burke Museum, located at 28 Loch Street, Beechworth has held the stories of our community since its beginnings in 1856 as an athenaeum and library for the booming goldfields population.
Originally honouring explorer Robert O’Hara Burke’s links to Beechworth, our community can be proud of the museum’s achievements. It is recognised as one of Australia’s best regional museums with a collection of more than 30,000 items from our distant and more recent past.
Accredited to the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria (AMaGA Victoria) the Burke has won many awards with its expert staff playing a key mentoring role for Deakin postgraduate students in Museum and Cultural Heritage studies.
This program sees students gain experience in collections management, helping with the mammoth task of digitising the collection for future generations.
The Burke Museum is open daily from 10am - 4:30pm. Disability access available.
Tickets are available to purchase from the Burke Museum or the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre.
