Destination Management Plan 2026 - 2036
Following the conclusion of the Indigo Destination Gamechanger Tourism Strategy 2018–2023, Indigo Shire Council has been developing a new long-term direction for the region’s visitor economy. This work is now reaching its final stages, with the Draft Indigo Destination Management Plan 2036 (DMP36), ready for public exhibition.
The DMP36 moves beyond traditional tourism management, towards a holistic regenerative approach. Guided by a triple bottom line framework, the Plan balances economic prosperity, community wellbeing and environmental stewardship. It aims to create a visitor economy that actively supports local communities, protects and restores the natural environment, and strengthens a resilient regional economy.
At the centre of the Plan is the Green Gold Rush vision, reimagining the historic concept of a gold rush by shifting the focus from extraction to regeneration and giving back. By 2036, Indigo Shire aims to be recognised as a global benchmark for regenerative tourism, with the visitor economy contributing $2.5 billion between 2026 and 2036 and catalysing $150 million in targeted regenerative investment.
Development of the draft has included extensive engagement over a 12-month period, with more than 480 touchpoints across community members, industry, advisory groups and regional partners, alongside subject matter expert and peer review. This process has ensured social, cultural, environmental and economic factors are carefully considered, while also recognising the need to prepare for future challenges such as climate change, infrastructure demand and visitor capacity.
The exhibition period runs from Wednesday 25 February to Friday 27 March.
All submissions received during this period will be acknowledged and considered before the Plan is finalised.
