Soft Plastics Kerbside Collection

Following the success of the 12-month soft plastics recycling pilot, Indigo Shire Council is pleased to announce that the soft plastics kerbside collection program will continue in partnership with Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia (SPSA), Halve Waste, and Cleanaway.

This innovative program allows residents to recycle their soft plastics directly through their kerbside collection service. Residents simply fill an orange collection bag with soft plastics, tie it off, and place it in their yellow-lidded recycling bin for processing.

The pilot program, which began for Indigo residents in August 2024, was funded through a national product stewardship scheme led by the Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia, Australian Food and Grocery Council, in collaboration with 40 brand manufacturers, Cleanaway, and Halve Waste.

A review of the trial data is now underway to help improve and standardise the program. One proposed change includes moving to a single standard orange bag for all participating councils, instead of the different shades of orange previously used to identify individual Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Please note: Current stocks of orange collection bags have been fully distributed. While we await new supplies, residents are encouraged to continue collecting and storing their soft plastics at home using any suitable bag or container. New orange bags will be made available once the program review is complete.

Thank you to all Indigo Shire residents for supporting this important recycling initiative and helping us reduce soft plastic waste in our community.
