Plasticwise Indigo

Hand holding a blue water bottle

Indigo Shire Council adopted a Plasticwise Policy in 2018.

The policy demonstrates Council’s leadership in sustainability by reducing, and eventually eliminating, single use plastic within Council operations and at all events.

We encourage and support all businesses, groups and individuals in the Shire to reduce their plastic waste too, with more details in the related sections below.

When purchasing items, ranging from toilet paper to road base, it is important to consider the environmental impacts of the product and attempt to make the most sustainable choice but, choosing a sustainable product can sometimes be confusing.

If you are a food business and would like to find out more about Plasticwise see our environmental health advice(PDF, 48KB).

Plasticwise community groups

Indigo Shire is home to a growing number of Plasticwise community groups.

Plasticwise is a grassroots community based movement focusing on reducing waste, particularly the amount of plastic ending up in landfill and our oceans.

Boomerang Bags

Boomerang Bags also have active chapters in Indigo Shire towns, and supply the community with reusable shopping bags, as well as various other plastic-free items for sale.

Soft plastic recycling

Following the strong success of our initial trial, the soft plastics recycling program is continuing, helping residents keep soft plastics out of landfill.

Since launching a trial in August 2024, the program has seen fantastic community support, with many residents embracing the opportunity to recycle soft plastic items through their kerbside bin.

Residents can continue to use the orange bag system by simply:

  • Filling an orange bag with accepted soft plastics
  • Tying it off when full
  • Placing it in their yellow-lidded recycling bin for collection and processing

A new supply of orange bags is now available, and residents can collect them from their nearest Customer Experience Centre.

We encourage everyone to keep up the great work and continue recycling soft plastics as part of their regular routine.

You can read more about the trial here.
