Yackandandah VIC Opens in New Home

The Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre (VIC) has re-opened in a new location, just in time for an expected influx of visitors.

The move sees the VIC leave its home of almost seven years to share a space with the Post Office, in the historic building at 15 High Street. 

Jennifer Allen, Coordinator of Visitor and Tourism Industry Services for Indigo Shire Council, has overseen the process of relocating the Centre to the historic building, and ensuring that the anticipated rush of summer visitors to Yackandandah will have high quality information and advice.

“The Post Office has a number of advantages over our previous location,” Jennifer said.

“In particular, it has street-level access for people using wheelchairs, strollers and prams. It is also close to parking and to a number of key High Street destinations. And it is, of course, one of Yack’s most prized historical buildings, constructed as a general store in 1857.”

Jennifer and Postmaster Chris Horton have coordinated a series of internal improvements, with careful planning of the space to maximise options for visitors and regular Post Office customers.

“The space is now set up for multiple services, with separate counters and displays,” Chris outlined.

“We will share both access doors, and the area is COVID-compliant for 12 customers plus staff. The Post Office currently operates Monday- Saturday, and the Visitor Information Centre 7 days a week, so the overlapping and support we can give each other should work well.”

“And we now have 21st Century solar power to help us both, as we add to the wonderful history of Yackandandah!”

 In addition to providing visitor information services, the VIC supports local and regional artisans with a wonderful range of crafts and giftware.
