Deakin University students undertaking their Master of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies have wrapped up a highly successful week of fieldwork at the Beechworth Historic Precinct, generating fresh and creative ideas for future interpretation and activation of the nationally significant site.

The intensive program immersed students in real-world heritage practice, with hands-on experience in heritage interpretation, archaeology, and site management alongside Council's museum and heritage staff.

Historic Precinct and Visitor Experience Manager Jennifer Allan said the partnership strengthens the precinct's role as a training ground for future heritage professionals.

"This program provides students with experience in a living heritage environment and ensures Beechworth remains at the forefront of contemporary museum practice," Ms Allan said.

"Their research will contribute ideas for future storytelling and activation of this nationally significant site, supporting Council's long-term vision to protect, celebrate, and activate Beechworth's rich heritage for generations to come."

Deakin University Lecturer, Dr Lorinda Cramer, said the program offered students an exceptional real-world learning experience.

"Our week in Beechworth has provided an amazing opportunity for our students to experience the management of a significant historic precinct and to creatively apply learning from their studies to the real world," Dr Cramer said.

"I'm deeply grateful to the Indigo Shire Council team for their mentorship and generosity.”

Student Shravani Sandbhor said the opportunity had been both meaningful and motivating. "Engaging with Beechworth's rich cultural landscape and beautiful environment made the experience even more meaningful," she said.

"This opportunity helped me develop valuable skills and has taken me an important step closer to my career goals in cultural heritage."

Council looks forward to receiving the students' final report early next year.
