Cultural Heritage Collections Assistance Program

Indigo Shire's Burke Museum and Cultural Heritage Team is delivering an exciting new program to support community groups to manage, curate or display cultural heritage collection.

About the program

We are fortunate to have many community groups such as museums, historical societies, RSLs, archives and clubs that house significant cultural heritage collections. These collections are often managed by volunteers who usually don’t have the time, staffing resources or expertise to undertake important projects.

To help support these groups, and assist in preserving their important cultural heritage collections, Indigo Shire’s Burke Museum and Cultural Heritage team has designed a program to provide professional museum staffing assistance.

The program will run over 18 months, with Burke Museum staff working for one week on-site at each community museum.

This program is generously supported by equipment purchased through the Victorian Government and Public Records Office of Victoria Local History Grants

Who is involved?

The following community groups were selected through an expressions of interest process:

  • Beechworth RSL
  • Chiltern Athenaeum
  • Rutherglen Historical Society
  • Stanley Athenaeum
  • Chiltern Courthouse
  • Tangambalanga History Group
  • Rutherglen RSL

Each participating organisation has been allocated a single, five-day block (one working week) of staffing assistance. Each project will take place two months apart. This will allow six projects from six different organisations to be completed each year.

For more information about each organisation and our work with them so far, click on the relevant link below.

Please note that this project is currently on hold due to Victorian State Government restrictions. The safety of staff and volunteers remain our priority during this time. We look forward to re-starting this project again once it is safe to do so.

Beechworth RSL

Beechworth RSL is a traditional RSL Sub-Branch with a significant collection of historical memorabilia. The collection covers local and national history from the Boer war until the 21st Century, with a focus on both world wars, Vietnam and modern peacekeeping operations.

Burke Museum staff spent a week with Beechworth RSL in November 2019. Sub-Branch President John Eldrid hosted the team, sharing his knowledge and passion for military history. The team worked on digitising a significant collection of peacekeeping memorabilia and providing training in exhibition skills.

Housed in the 1866 athenaeum building, it houses significant collections relating to Sir John McEwen, Henry Handel Richardson and Alfred Wallace Eustace.
