Shire profile

It couldn’t be a better mix — a great place to live with an excellent climate, community facilities, great retail centres, and close proximity to major cities. Indigo Shire and the wider North East region provide first class health services, primary and secondary schools with tertiary educational facilities also close by.

Our climate

Indigo Shire has a Mediterranean-style climate with long, hot summers and relatively short, cold winters. The eastern section of the Shire, at the head of the Kiewa and Ovens valley, has relatively high elevation with Beechworth at 580 metres above sea level whereas to the west, Rutherglen is at 169 metres above sea level.

Our towns

The main urban areas are Beechworth, Rutherglen, Yackandandah and Chiltern and each have rich histories. There are also the smaller, but equally attractive and vibrant communities of Wahgunyah, Tangambalanga, Stanley and Barnawartha.

Our offer

We could talk about the food and the wine, the extensive rail trails, the distinct seasons – our autumn is really something quite special. We could talk about our preserved history – Australia's most significant collection of historic towns. But it is more than that. We have something quite different and unique.

It's the winding roads and the little discoveries you make at the end of them. It's the environment – the unspoilt corners of the Shire like Wahgunyah on the mighty Murray River and Upper Sandy Creek in the Kiewa Valley, the giant granite outcrops around Mt Pilot, the national parks and natural landscapes. Mt Buffalo or Mt Hotham can be seen from across the Shire and are only about a one-hour drive for a day of snow skiing.

Our location

The Shire straddles the Hume Freeway, the main highway between Melbourne and Sydney, and also the main railway between these two great Australian destinations. Day trips to Melbourne are easy either by car, rail or coach. All towns are serviced by public transport and there is a regional airport in nearby Albury.
