Our Engage Program aims to work in partnership with young people and community to increase young people’s confidence, and ability to make decisions for and with their community, as well increase young people’s wellbeing, access to employment and training and mental health services.

The program responds dynamically to young people’s needs, as expressed through recent youth specific consultations. Programs include:

Indigo Shire Youth Ambassadors Program

This annual Youth Leadership and Youth Voice program, is open to 15 year five students from across Indigo Shire and 15 young people aged 14-18 years living in Indigo Shire, who are passionate about creating positive change in their local community. From Wahgunyah to Rutherglen, Chiltern, Beechworth, Stanley, Wooragee, Indigo Valley, Barnawartha, Yackandandah, Osbornes Flat, Tangambalanga, Kiewa, Kergunyah and all the places in between.

Youth ambassadors are given the opportunity to become the youth voice and youth representative for their community, gain skills and mentoring in leadership and effective communication, discuss and explore youth and community issues, have a say about the future of their community and create actions for positive change. Youth Ambassadors attend an initial two day leadership and change makers residency, followed by key engagement dates throughout the year.

To apply for the Youth Ambassador program contact our Youth Officer on youth@indigoshire.vic.gov.au or text/call 0422 373 542.

ISC Lifeguard Program

This program responds to an identified need within young people to develop skills for part time employment in local industries. The program was successfully piloted in 2016 when 10 young people from all over Indigo Shire, were offered free training in lifeguarding (including water safety and first aid skill development). Graduates were then offered shadow shifts at their local pool and an interview and employment pathway with our pool employer, Momentum One.

Positions for the 2018 ISC Lifeguard Program open August 20. Contact our Youth Officer on youth@indigoshire.vic.gov.au or text/call 0422 373 542.

Community Specific Youth Action Groups

Young people from key towns in Indigo Shire are invited to participate in Youth Action Groups where they develop ideas to create new initiatives and events for their communities. This can include photographic competitions, music events or small projects addressing a particular concern locally. We are currently running Youth Action Crews in Rutherglen, Beechworth and Kiewa/Tangambalanga, and will starting new Action Groups in Barnawartha and Chiltern during term three and term four of 2018.

To join your local Youth Action Crew contact our Youth Officer on youth@indigoshire.vic.gov.au or text/call 0422 373 542. Applications for this program are open all year.

LGBTQI+ Support Group

This support group commenced in 2016 and has provided support for isolated rural Same Sex Attracted and Gender Diverse young people. Facilitated by our Youth Officer, the aim is to provide participants with connection to local support services, provide a safe place where young people can get together and enjoy organised activities and events.

To attend a ISC LGBTQI support group gathering, contact our Youth Officer on youth@indigoshire.vic.gov.au or text/call 0422 373 542.

Youth Red Carpet Awards

In 2018 we will be facilitating our new Indigo Shire Youth Red Carpet Awards. The annual awards will highlight the outstanding and ongoing contributions of both young people and people in community supporting young people. The event will be organised and hosted by young people, alongside our Youth Officer.

Nominations for the Indigo Shire Youth Awards will be opening in October 2018.
