Dispose of unwanted chemicals with Detox Your Home

Published on 26 July 2019

Indigo Shire residents are being encouraged to do a household chemical detox this August, with Detox Your Home coming to Beechworth and Wangaratta.

Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service for community members to dispose of common, highly toxic household chemicals without harming their health or the environment.

Indigo Shire Mayor, Councillor Bernard Gaffney, said it’s a great service that encourages safe disposal of common household chemicals.

“Detox your home is a free service for residents to dispose of chemicals they would otherwise have to pay for,” he said.

“Many of us may have unwanted chemicals sitting in our shed or home. Common items such as cleaning products, cooking oil and fuels can be quite dangerous. They could harm your family and pets, add extra fuel in a fire – something which we are very mindful of in Indigo Shire - and even pollute the environment for future generations.”

These items should not be placed in landfill as they can potentially explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals. Pouring them down the drain can also pollute waterways.
