New grant program to bolster community events

Community events held in Indigo Shire will have the opportunity to bid for funding support when a new Council Community Event Grants Program opens on Wednesday 25 September.

At its August meeting, Council moved to launch a new grants program specifically supporting local, grass roots events aimed at encouraging local participation, celebrating local communities and focusing on promoting social inclusion and community wellbeing.

“Indigo Shire is renowned for its community spirit which Council hopes to foster even further by encouraging local people to come together under various event banners,” said Cr Bernard Gaffney, Mayor of Indigo Shire.

“We found that worthwhile community focused events were at a disadvantage because they were falling through the gaps of our existing funding programs. They did not qualify for a tourism events grant as economic and tourism outcomes were not their main objectives. However, these events still have merit and deserve the opportunity of a level playing field when applying for financial support.”

$15,000 has been set aside for the new program and organisers can apply for funding from $200 to $2,000. Applications will only be considered from locally based groups and organisations or those meeting a demonstrated need within the Shire. Preference will be given to applications where funding is not available from other sources.

“Environmental sustainability will also form part of the application assessment process and events will have to prove they meet the standards of the Waste Wise Event Toolkit,” Cr Gaffney explained.

“Council is appointing a selection panel comprising of representatives from key community organisations in addition to two Councillors and two Council Officers. It is envisaged that this cross section of stakeholders will provide a high level of strategic input aligned with the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan and the Council Plan ensuring the grant money will be well spent.”

Council officers will be available to discuss applications on Wednesday 9 October. Community groups are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 1300 365 003.

Applications close on Monday 11 November at 5pm with guidelines and further information now available at
