Have a say on future of Beechworth Railway Precinct

Published on 28 March 2019

Indigo Shire Council has released the Draft Beechworth Railway Precinct Management Plan for public comment.

The draft plan outlines a vision for the management of the precinct with designated activity areas to guide future development including: Active Recreation, Activity Space, Open Space and Future Parking.

Indigo Shire Mayor Cr Bernard Gaffney encouraged all community members to view the plan and provide comment.

“The Beechworth Railway Precinct is an important site in Indigo Shire – it’s home to some significant historical buildings including the Beechworth Railway Station, Goods Shed and Platelayers Cottage,” Cr Gaffney said.

“The precinct also includes valued sporting clubs and activities including the Beechworth Croquet Club, the Beechworth Skate Park and is adjacent to the Senior Citizens Centre.

“Up until now, there has been no overarching document guiding the precinct. The draft plan outlines our vision to ensure the precinct is a place for the whole community, with vibrant recreation and tourism offerings whilst acknowledging its historical significance. It will also support and enhance appropriate business opportunities fo the site."

The Indigo Shire community is also encouraged to provide input into the future of the former Platelayers Cottage that is located within the Beechworth Railway Precinct. Council is considering whether to restore the historic building at a cost of more than $200,000, or demolishing the building which is in a state of disrepair. The building is a rare surviving example of railway housing within a region.

“It’s an exciting chapter for the precinct. As we embark on the redevelopment of the Beechworth Goods Shed, the extension of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, and look at options for the former Platelayers Cottage, it's timely to gather community feedback on the future of the precinct as a whole,” Cr Gaffney said.

Community members are encouraged to view the Railway Precinct Plan and find out more about the Platelayers Cottage, either online or at a drop‐in session, and provide comment:

Drop‐in sessions will be held:

‐ Wednesday 3 April 2019, 5.30pm to 6.30pm
