Waste management plays an important part in ensuring Indigo Shire's sustainability now and into the future. Effective waste management helps minimise our environmental impact and ensure we are meeting the needs of our community.
Indigo Shire residents send around 2000 tonnes of domestic waste to landfill each year and we divert 3900 tonnes of waste from landfill each year, via our recycling and organics service.
In March this year, we asked community members to share their views via survey on waste, recycling and resource recovery in Indigo Shire. We heard from more than 150 community members and this feedback has been taken into account in the development of the Draft Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy.(PDF, 5MB)
The draft strategy includes an analysis of existing Council waste services and opportunities for improvement. Some of the changes proposed in the draft strategy include:
- Introduction of a voucher system for green waste disposal
- Changes to the way hard waste disposal is managed
- Improvements to public bins around Indigo Shire
- A greater emphasis on waste education
We are now inviting submissions on the draft strategy.
