Tourism is an important industry in Indigo Shire and Rutherglen is a key tourist destination.

Council has recently undertaken an independent review of the Rutherglen Destination Management Structure to optimise tourism in Rutherglen.

About the review

The Destination Game Changer 2023 Tourism Strategy recommended a review of Rutherglen’s destination management structure .

The objective of the review was to examine and identify ways to resolve the structural fragmentation and complexity of Rutherglen destination management and optimise tourism and the visitor economy outcomes for the Rutherglen area.

Independent tourism consultant, Tom Smith, was engaged to undertake the review in April 2019 and consult with key tourism stakeholders. The draft report presents findings and recommendations informed by stakeholder and industry input and professional industry insights.

The report presents a number of options for the key destination management components. Recommendations were informed by industry and stakeholder consultations, as well as industry best practice.
