We all want to get back to gathering with family and friends and enjoying our beautiful towns.

Our Business Support Team is working hard to ensure that when we can safely open up our towns are ready to go with additional outdoor eating options.

With the help of the Victorian Government’s Outdoor Dining and Entertainment Package, we’ve activated spaces in Yackandandah and Rutherglen and now we’re turning our attention to Chiltern and Beechworth.

In Beechworth, we’re planning an outdoor eating space in Star Lane and in Chiltern, a parklet outside the Golden Ball Cafe and Gelato Bar in Conness Street which is similar to the installation outside the town’s bakery.

Eating outdoors where takeaway food is involved, is now considered part of “COVIDNormal” life and using our streets to expand our outdoor eating capacity has been a strong focus over the last 18 months.

Feedback from community members and business owners has been extremely positive.

The new locations at Beechworth and Chiltern have been selected as the most suitable to expand outdoor eating capacity in these two towns as we approach the warmer months.

We’ve been working with local consultant Outsider Projects and furniture supplier Steel Road Custom Furniture in Yackandandah to design the spaces for Beechworth and Chiltern.

In Chiltern, the parklet will:

  • Rejuvenate a relatively quiet section of the street and provide a visual clue to more activity at this end of the street
  • Replicate what is in front of Chiltern Bakery but with improved planter boxes
  • Include a new bench seat on the adjacent footpath
  • Requires the use of 1.5 car spaces to allow for the new bicycle parking

View the design by clicking the link below and referring to the similar installation in front of the bakery in the picture at the top of the page:

In Beechworth, the pop-up will be in Star Lane and will:

  • Replace the well-received temporary furniture on the old milk bar corner which is being removed to allow for building renovations
  • Feature seating, tables and planters as a single unit

Both installations are temporary, however pending usage and popularity, have the potential to become permanent.

We're now seeking feedback on these concepts to ensure we haven’t missed anything in the planning stage and pending submissions, we will then move to construction and installation.

Hard copies of these designs will be available to view at our Customer Service Centres across the Shire pending regional lockdown restrictions lifting.

Hi Just looking at the Star Lane proposal Can I suggest some sort of shade for the space, It runs north south and would benefit from some permanent shade in the summer months. The trees look good but I suspect they wont be that size in a temporary planter for sometime and timber battened pergola over the seats may provide some added shade for lunchtime visits
    Thanks Ken
