North East Youth Climate Summit

We are partnering with a number of local Councils to support Indigo Shire Youth for Climate Action (ISYCA) and the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), to run a North East Youth Climate Summit for three days in December.

About the Summit

The Summit will be an opportunity for young people from across the region to come together to talk about a range of issues and how to address them. The Summit will be based on OzGREEN's Youth Leading the World model, which takes participants through a process of:

  • FOCUS: share their concerns and talk about what they see happening in their communities and the world, before voting on their top concerns as a group
  • VISION: create a vision for the future by drawing and then writing what they want their homes, schools, work places, communities and the world to look like
  • CHANGE: discuss the theory of change and how community change can occur, share stories of young people who have created community change, and brainstorm change ideas to build their vision
  • ACTION: think about what they can see themselves doing, divide into groups with an interest in the same change idea, and develop these ideas into action plans to implement in their community.

The Youth Leading the World process includes lots of games, small group discussions/planning, and is directed by the interests and concerns of the young people involved.

The Summit will conclude with a Community Forum, where participants will have the opportunity to share their learnings and action plans with community members who may be able to help them implement their plans.

DELWP has generously provided funding to support participant action plans after the Summit. Action planning groups will be able to receive their own grant funding to implement their action plans, and there is funding to support this implementation.

The event will be free for participants thanks to the generous support of DELWP and the participating Councils.

Who can be involved

Participants from 12 to 30 years of age are welcome to register for the program. Upper primary and secondary school aged students, as well as school leavers and young people in their early/mid 20s are particularly encouraged to participate.

All participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID due to government restrictions and to keep participants safe.

Participants from around NE Victoria, including the Albury-Wodonga area, Indigo, Alpine, Wangaratta, Moira and Towong Shires, will be able to participate in the event. Participants may still live in the area, or may have moved away for studies but still feel a strong connection to the North East.

The facilitators will be mostly people from North East Victoria. The Indigo Shire Youth for Climate Action team is trained to facilitate the program, including one member who has been facilitating the Youth Leading the World program for around 10 years since she first participated when she was in high school. Others from around Indigo Shire and Wodonga have also trained to facilitate the program. Local council staff members, and staff from DELWP will also attend to support the running of the program.

If schools would like to send a group of students to the program (for example a student leadership team or a student green team), they are welcome to send a teacher or two to accompany students, although this is not necessary. Students will develop fantastic leadership and project management skills that can be transferred back into their work in their schools.

Community Forum

An essential part of the North East Youth Climate Summit is the Community Forum on the third day of the program. This is where community members, including school principals and teachers, can come and hear from students about their concerns and ideas, and can share their own feedback and expertise.

Community members, including staff and representatives from a number of local councils, local business, school teachers and principals, environmental and social entrepreneurs, community organisations and other experts are invited to come together to hear from the youth participants, and to share their own feedback and expertise.

These community members will be valuable partners and supporters of our young peoples' action plans going forward.

For safety reasons, community members who attend must be fully vaccinated.
