At its December meeting, Council endorsed the Draft Chiltern Destination Playspace Concept Designs for the purposes of public exhibition.

After extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the community earlier in the year in July, we're now inviting the community to review and provide feedback on the Draft Concept Designs via formal submissions.

We received State Government funding to develop concept plans for an iconic destination playspace around Chiltern's Martins Park, Lake Anderson and Goods Shed precincts, creating connections to the town centre via Martins Park for the enjoyment of visitors and community alike. This project strategically aligns with the Indigo Shire Destination Game Changer 2023 Tourism Strategy to support Council’s economic development and visitor economy objectives, by enhancing Chiltern as a destination township and a ‘must-stop’ destination for touring families travelling along the Hume Freeway.

The Chiltern Destination Playspace project included comprehensive on-site assessment and from this, the initial design and scoping work identified a number of opportunities and challenges. Site size, complexity with existing, ageing infrastructure, heritage features, access and visibility and connections between the proposed sites determined a precinct-based solution.

The Playspace, Pool and Lake Anderson precinct (including the Chiltern Goods Shed) provided the opportunity to design fully integrated, but distinct elements;

  • Phase 1. Playground and Road/ Parking (including Pump Track)
  • Phase 2. Swimming Pool and Facilities
  • Phase 3. Roadworks and Amenities - connections and flow (from the playspace and pool to town centre, lake, Goods Shed for walking, cycling, parking and recreation).

Consolidating these to deliver one seamless concept design was the outcome with proposed implementation in three phases. These distinct project elements better positions Council to seek grant funding from various funding programs for future phased implementation.

The Chiltern Destination Playspace project will be a landmark and high-profile drawcard for Chiltern as well as a significant family-friendly tourism attraction for the town and the High Country region more broadly.
