Tourism development
The Tourisim Board was established as a Section 86 Committee of Indigo Shire Council in 1997 to provide a co-ordinated regional focus for marketing and tourism development.
The Indigo Tourism Board's role is to act as a central body for all organisations and individuals involved in tourism and to provide a unified approach to tourism development, management, planning and marketing on behalf of the tourism industry, community and Indigo Shire Council.
The Board's structure acknowledges the close working relationship between Council and industry and includes membership of the five recognised tourism organisations in Indigo Shire; Chiltern Tourist Association, Rutherglen Wine Region Tourism Inc., Beechworth & District Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc., Winemakers of Rutherglen, and Yackandandah & District Tourist Association Inc., as well as two nominated Councillors and staff members from the Tourism & Economic Development Unit of Indigo Shire Council.
The Board also maintains co-operative partnerships with regional and state organisations such as Legends, Wine & High Country, Tourism Victoria, Country Victoria Tourism Council and Investment Albury Wodonga.
Indigo Shire is fortunate to include a range of exceptional tourism products, from the well-known Rutherglen wineries, the historic towns of Chiltern, Yackandandah and Beechworth, to the quality food establishments and range of accommodation. The Indigo Tourism Board has the responsibility for tourism activities across the Shire and includes:
- Visitor services
- Marketing
- Industry liaison
- Festivals and events
- Product development
Beyond these areas Council is continuing to improve the tourism infrastructure in the region with major projects such as the Rutherglen Wine Experience and the Historic & Cultural Precinct in Beechworth, to help ensure this region remains the preferred tourist destination in North East Victoria.
