National School Tree Day
July 2006
Calling all green thumbs!
Planet Ark is calling on schools, community groups and individuals in the North East to get down and dirty and help plant trees on National Tree Day’s. Last year, 350,000 volunteers planted over 1.5 million native trees at more than 4,000 sites.
This year’s ‘Schools Tree Day’ is being celebrated throughout the North East on Friday the 28th of July.
The Indigo Shire in conjunction with the North East Waterwatch program will assist with planting and carry out environmental educational activities at schools located in Beechworth and Tangambalanga.
“Planting native trees in our region not only beautifies our area, but it also helps the environment and is a great day out for our community,” says Carolyn Humby, local Waterwatch Coordinator.
Shay Simpson from the Indigo Shire says this year 1,500 trees will be donated by the Shire to schools for planting on or near their grounds with the aim of improving local biodiversity.
A further 200 plants donated by the Shire will be planted by community groups to help stabilise creek banks.
National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in association with Toyota and AMP Foundation.
This year’s National Tree Day falls on Sunday 30th July with Schools Tree Day taking place on Friday 28th July.
