It is time to spring into action with green waste disposal
August 2006
He said this was the time of year for residents to start thinking about their green waste disposal in urban areas and urged residents not to burn off where possible.
“This fortnightly collection of green waste for urban residents means no more piles of leaves around the home and it also reduces waste matter going into landfill,” he said.
“This green waste collected by Council’s Waste/Recycle/Green Waste contractor Cleanaway is delivered to Greenchip Recycling in Wodonga to be transformed into green organics.
“The bins used are 240 litres in size and currently there are approximately 682 residents using the green waste collection service which is great. Of the 682 participants approximately 71% are placing their bins out for collection each fortnight which is considered to be a high participation rate.”
“People can dispose of grass clippings, leaves, garden prunings and small branches.” It is a sustainable and responsible solution to green waste.”
Indigo Shire is just the second council in North East Victoria to introduce a green organic collection for residents.
The three bin system that Indigo has introduced is considered best practice state-wide and will help Indigo residents to play an important role in reducing the amount of waste sent to transfer stations and landfills.
This service is optional with a cost of $83.20 per annum and will remove over 6 cubic metres of green waste from each serviced premises during the year.
