Indigo Shire Liquor Accord Launch

December 2005

The Indigo Shire Liquor Industry Accord has been launched to encourage and promote best practices in licensed premises in the Shire.

This is a first in Indigo Shire and has been made possible through the co-operation between Council staff, Victoria Police and licensees in the Shire.

Indigo Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Mr John Costello said this accord would contribute to the safety of patrons, staff and the local community by promoting the responsible service of alcohol and the maintenance of high standards of behaviour in and around licensed premises.

He said it brought together the licensees of hotels, licensed restaurants, licensed clubs, wineries, packaged liquor outlets and sporting clubs.

“It is supported by the Victoria Police, Consumer Affairs Victoria - Liquor Licensing and Council,” he said.

“The aims of the Accord are to address relevant issues and to provide a combined and committed approach that will be beneficial to both licensed premises and the community.

“The Indigo Shire Liquor Industry Accord relies on mutual cooperation and open communication between the community and agencies involved.

“It is not to say that licensed premises do not already conduct themselves in accordance with this proposal, however, this proposal seeks to document their practices and to create uniformity with respect to the implementation of State liquor laws.”

Mr Costello said communities and potential patrons had a right to enjoy their chosen entertainment or to socialise in a safe environment, the primary focus of the local Accord.

He said licensees of the Indigo Shire were totally committed to upholding the aims, objectives and best practices of the Indigo Shire Liquor Industry Accord.

1.      To promote the Indigo Shire and its licensed venues as a safe and enjoyable location for the local community and visitors to the area.

2.      To build and foster a partnership between the liquor industry, Police, Council and community in a supportive environment.

3.      To facilitate continued appropriate management of licensed premises, and ensure they are managed in a responsible and safe manner.

4.      To meet on a regular basis to discuss and resolve relevant issues that impact on the Indigo Shire community.

5.      To monitor and discourage anti-social behaviour, and at all times have due consideration for the surrounding amenity of the area.
