Chiltern and Barnawartha Flood Study
June 2006
Indigo Shire Council, in conjunction with the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA), has commenced a study to investigate flooding in Chiltern and Barnawartha.
Indigo Shire Council Assets Manager Mr Phil Prior said specialist floodplain management consultants, Water Technology Pty Ltd, have been commissioned to assist Council with the study.
He said as part of the study, existing flood risks within the town would be better defined, leading to more appropriate future planning and development options.
“Appropriate flood mitigation opportunities will be identified to help reduce flood risk,” he said.
“The involvement of local residents, property owners, businesses and community organisations is vital in achieving successful study outcomes.
“As part of the community consultation process, Community Information Sessions are planned in June, and members of the local community are encouraged to attend.
“The Community Information Session will have representatives from Indigo Shire Council, North East CMA and Water Technology.”
North East Catchment Management Authority Floodplain Manager Mr Roel von’t Steen said the information session was vital for residents as it would also include background regarding historical flooding in the towns, as well as information about this study and its objectives.
He said people attending the session would have the opportunity to provide information that will be used during the preparation of the study.
“A questionnaire has been distributed through much of the community and will be available during the information sessions or copies may be obtained from the Chiltern WAW and Barnawartha Post Office.
“It seeks information from local residents about flooding and provides opportunity for community input to the study.”
The Community Information Sessions will be held as follows:
Barnawartha Hall Supper Room
Wednesday, 21 June 2006 – 2.00 – 4.00 pm
Chiltern Community Centre
Wednesday, 21 June 2006 – 7.00 –9.00 pm
Residents from Barnawartha and Chiltern are welcome to attend either meeting.
