Beechworth Ned Kelly Great Debate

May 2006

As Ned Kelly has polarised a nation for decades this infamous bushranger will continue to divide opinion in a fresh forum at the inaugural Beechworth Ned Kelly Weekend Great Debate.

Sparks will fly in the historic Kelly town with the debate topic – “Ned Kelly – an inappropriate hero for Australia” under the watchful eye of debate moderator Dr Barry Jones.

Dr Jones said he was honoured to participate in a debate of this calibre and to be part of an investigation into this significant national dilemma about one of Australia’s most revered and loved icons.

He said one of the greatest priorities in this nation was encouraging open debate and this forum enabled not only the skilled debaters a chance to delve into the Australian psyche but also the county as a whole.

“And where better to examine the Kelly enigma than with the backdrop of the Beechworth Historical Courthouse where Ned Kelly’s preliminary hearing was held,” he said.

“We are set for an engaging and entertaining debate with eminent historians, renowned debaters and media identities.”

Those to battle it out in favour of this debate topic are Julian Burnside QC, ABC Radio Statewide drive host Kathy Bedford and former police Superintendent Robert Haldane.

The against team consist of Ned Kelly historians Ian Jones, Dr Keith McMenomy and Associate professor John McQuilton.

Indigo Shire Council Tourism and Economic Development Manager Mr Seane Pieper said the Great Debate was the essence of how Beechworth treated Kelly history from a tourism perspective; honestly respectfully and in an entertaining way.

“The Kelly phenomenon is an historic subject of national significance and one which many Australians wish to learn more about, but don’t have the time or inclination to ferret through a dusty library or scratch around the bush,” he said.

“The great debate will bring the Kelly stories and myths off the shelves and out of the bush through the minds and mouths of some of Australia's foremost intellects and celebrities.

“Our community, our State and Australia will be the richer for this.”

Beechworth Ned Kelly Weekend event organiser Mrs Noelene Allen said people had a chance to be part of Australia’s modern history as this was the first debate of its kind held.

She said the many weekend activities took place with the atmosphere of one of the most authentic Courthouses in Australia, in Australia’s best preserved Ned Kelly town.

The debate will be held in the Beechworth Memorial Hall, Ford St, Beechworth.
