Beechworth’s Historic and Cultural Precinct will run daily Ned Kelly and Gold Rush guided walking tours through the town, enabling people to learn more about the fables and facts of these important periods in Australian History.

The launch marks a significant step in the development of tourism in Beechworth.

Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct tour guide Mr Darren Sutton said the tours had sprung to life through visitor demand and the community’s desire to tell its important story.

He said Beechworth was one of the best living examples of how Australia grew up.

“Many significant layers of Australia’s history are seen throughout the town and none more so than the Kelly and Gold stories,” he said.

“The town’s classic period buildings and museums are testimony to our community’s desire to preserve its past and the number of people now visiting the town highlight the relevance and appeal of its story.

“History is more than just buildings and people are able to hear the stories that go beyond the granite facades.

“We have an obligation to tell these stories and our tours will go a long way towards this – seven days a week and 363 days a year.”

Indigo Shire Council Tourism and Economic Development Manager Mr Seane Pieper said the tours were high quality and available at set times every day.

He said anyone planning to visit the North East would find a passionate and well-informed guide waiting to bring history alive right before people’s eyes.

“Families, school groups, tourism operators – anyone can turn up and know there is a great activity on offer in the town and that it will be memorable.”

Beechworth’s Ned Kelly Walking tours run daily at 10.30am for 1 ½ hours and the Gold Rush tours run daily at 12pm for one hour.
