An outline of the role of Council in law enforcement.

Council is responsible for some aspects of law enforcement including:

Animal management

All dogs and cats over the age of three months are required to be registered with Council.  It is an offence to allow your dog or cat to wander at large (penalties will apply). There are also restrictions on the number and types of animals that may be kept in a general residential area.

Local laws

The Local Government Act enables Council to make local laws to provide peace and good order of the municipality. Indigo Shire Council's local laws cover such areas as:

  • protecting residential amenities
  • camping and temporary dwellings
  • burning off and use of incinerators
  • control of livestock
  • consumption of alcohol on roads/footpaths
  • the keeping of animals
  • street selling and collections
  • street furniture and advertising signs
  • behaviour in municipal places.

Parking management

Parking is policed by local law officers to ensure the maximum use of available parking spaces and the protection of other motorists and pedestrians.
