Yackandandah gets set for a Derby Day with a difference
Frantic last minute preparations are underway in the sheds and garages of Yackandandah ahead of one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Australian Spring racing calendar – the Great Yackandandah Billy Cart Race.
Now in its sixth big year, the event returns to the charming Gold Era town in Victoria’s North East on Sunday 8 November.
Dozens of drivers of all ages, from the very young to the young at heart, are expected to line up at the starting grid for an exhilarating, (and environmentally friendly!) race past the historic Courthouse and down the William Street hill.
Competitors will vie for prizes awarded for the Fastest Cart, Slowest Cart, Best Novelty Cart, Best Dressed Driver, Cart With Most Recycled Parts, Fear Factor and new this year, the Billy Cart Queen prize awarded to the fastest girl on four wheels.
The Great Yackandandah Billy Cart Race is a major fundraiser for the Yackandandah Primary School. Great food will available on the day including home-made cake stall and fairy floss.
Check-in for entrants is at 8:30am, with racing underway at 9:30am until 2pm for Preschool, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Open Class categories. The program will also feature a ‘box billycart’ circuit race on foot for younger children.
The event is conducted in accordance with strict safety guidelines and carts must be inspected prior to race day. All entrants enter the race at their own risk.
