H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu)
Key Messages – MODIFIED ‘SUSTAIN’ PHASE
4 June 2009 – 5.00pm

1.  Victoria is now in a modified ‘Sustain’ phase to manage the impact of the H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu) in our community.
•    The virus has so far been mild and can be compared with the normal winter flu.
•    Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

2. Only people identified by their doctor as a case of Human Swine Flu will need to be quarantined.
•    Cases may not necessarily be laboratory tested.
•    Your doctor may order antiviral medication based on the onset of symptoms and medical need.
•    If you have Human Swine Flu you will need to be quarantined at home for three days from the start of antiviral medication.
•    If you are not on antivirals, you will need to be quarantined for seven days.
•    Household members do not need to be quarantined.
•    Household members of identified cases may also be given antiviral medication, Tamiflu, as a preventative measure. Discuss this with your doctor.

3.  The Victorian Government will focus on supporting those in the community most vulnerable to influenza.
•    This will include people in aged care facilities, special developmental schools and hospitals.
•    The Victorian Government will provide day-to-day support for those most in need in the community.
•    Dedicated flu clinics continue to operate for the very sick across the state to support our emergency departments.
•    Only present to your hospital if you are in serious need of medical attention

4. Schools will no longer be closed when there are confirmed cases.
•    Special developmental schools may continue to be closed when cases of Human Swine Flu are confirmed and other settings such as child care centres, will be managed on a case by case basis.

5. Your best defence against the flu is good hygiene practices.
•    Wash your hands often with soap and water, and especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
•    Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
•    Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.
•    Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

6. If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
•    Call your GP for medical advice.
•    If you are ill and you present yourself to school or work, you may be asked to return home.
•    Visit www.health.vic.gov.au or call the Swine Influenza Hotline on 180 2007 for general information. If you have flu-like symptoms call Nurse-on-Call on 1300 606 024 (24 hours, 7 days)
•    Be responsible. We all have our part to play in reducing the spread of H1N1 influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu).
