Fire Services Property Levy
In 2013 the State Government introduced the Fire Services Property Levy (FSPL), this replaced the existing FSL charged by insurance companies on your home insurance premiums. The State Government directed all Councils to collect the FSPL on its behalf. Our role is to act as a collection agency: the levy we collect is transferred directly to State Government, who is the responsible authority.
Is the Fire Services Property Levy a Council Charge?
Although this levy appears on rates instalment notices as a separate line item, the Fire Services Property Levy is not a council charge. It is a compulsory levy that we collect on behalf of the state government. It is overseen by the State Revenue Office.
The Fire Services Property Levy is made up of a:
- Fixed component
- Variable charge, assessed on the property’s capital improved value.
If you receive a rates concession for your principal place of residence, you'll automatically receive the Fire Services Property Levy concession rate: a $50 discount from the total levy amount.
