Autumn firewood collection

The Autumn Firewood Collection Season for 2018 starts across Victoria on Thursday 1 March and closes on 30 June.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Parks Victoria staff will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to make sure people are doing the right thing while collecting their firewood.

Important information

  • Firewood can be collected only from designated collection areas. Maps of collection areas will be available at from 1 March, or call 136 186.
  • Collection is limited to a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day, and no more than 16 cubic metres per household per financial year.
  • Felling of trees for firewood is strictly prohibited. Please consider the needs of others when collecting firewood.
  • The amount of domestic firewood available across Victoria is varied and some households rely on firewood for winter energy, so consider others when taking firewood.
  • Check for planned burning. Collection areas may be closed at short notice. Go to, download the VicEmergency app or call 1800 226 226.

Under the Forest Act 1958, people who collect firewood outside designated firewood collection areas or a firewood collection season or take more than the maximum allowable amounts can face an infringement notice of $634, or a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment or a fine of up to $7,928 or both, if the matter proceeded to Court.
