The State Government recently announced $12 million in the 2017-18 Budget for Stage 1 of the Cycling Optimisation Plan, to provide:

  • Extensions and enhancements for the Beechworth to Yackandandah-Osbornes Flat rail trail
  • Enhancements for existing trails (“wow factor” installations, wayfinding)
  • Marketing to provide broad awareness and targeted segment-specific campaigns
  • Support for a cycle hub and support for other private sector business activation.

North East Victoria Cycling Optimisation

The Cycling Optimisation Business Plan and Master Plan Project is designed to ensure North East Victoria maintains its position as Australia’s premier cycling destination.

It will continue to develop world class cycling infrastructure and experiences that attract growing numbers of visitors and helps to grow new and existing businesses.

North East Victoria's Visitor Economy

North East Victoria attracts more than 3 million visitors a year, almost half of whom are domestic overnight visitors. This is projected to grow to 4.5 million visitors by 2025.

The value of tourism in North East Victoria is $711 million in total output and contributes to 3,638 jobs.

On average 6% of domestic overnight visitors to North East Victoria participate in cycling, which is double the average for regional Victoria. This equates to around 100,000 cycling visitors to North East Victoria each year.

The economic impact from cycling visitors to North East Victoria is $119 million in output and 626 jobs. The cycling market in North East Victoria grew 72% in the past 10 years predicted to reach 255,000 cycling visitors in North East Victoria by 2025.

This growth provides significant opportunity for businesses to expand to meet the growing needs of the cycle market.

  • North East Victoria boasts the two longest rail trails in Victoria: The Great Victorian Rail Trail and Murray to Mountains
  • The Murray to Mountains trail is rated the best in the nation in terms of quality of trail surface, scenery, and complementary product and experiences
  • North East Victoria has around 50% of all formalised mountain bike single tracks in Victoria
  • Mt Buller is the number one destination for mountain biking in Australia measured by the length of trail, quality of construction, scenery and accommodation
