Time to showcase your town

With Beechworth's recent success in winning the overall 2017 Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities Award, Indigo Shire's Mayor, Cr Jenny O'Connor, is urging towns and organisations in the Shire to showcase their communities.

Cr O'Connor said all the towns in Indigo had much to be proud of and should consider entering the awards.

"Since their inception in 1968, the awards have grown from being a simple anti-litter campaign to a nationally recognised program encouraging projects as varied as preserving heritage, saving water and energy, community action and leadership," she said.

"The long-term behavioural change across communities brought about by these awards allows us to build better communities year by year, and encourages us to tread lightly on our landscape.

Our involvement and the recognition it has received over many years is testament to the wonderfully proactive and proud communities across our Shire."

Beechworth community member Iris Mannik has been involved for more than 20 years in gathering and collating entries for the Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards.

"Being involved in the Tidy Towns family is rewarding and engaging while proudly showcasing the diversity of the sustainable living in our community," she said.

The awards recognise community achievements by directing the spotlight to innovative and inspiring community projects. Entrants from previous years showcased:

  • civic, cultural and environmental activities
  • development and enhancement of community facilities and amenity
  • schools' environmental programs and initiatives
  • enhancing sustainability of local environments
  • litter prevention, recycling programs and community clean-up initiatives
  • protection of the natural environment.

There is no limit to the number of initiatives you can enter and the awards are open to anyone - community groups such as Landcare, service clubs, committees or "friends of" groups; local youth and school groups, sporting clubs.

Award nominations are now open with entries closing on 6 April. Judging will take place throughout June, with finalists announced at the end of July. Beechworth will be hosting the State finalists in October, for the awards presentation.
