More meetings to listen to residents on Council Plan

Indigo Shire Mayor Cr Jenny O'Connor said a series of five meetings to work with the shire community on the draft Council Plan had been extended to nine meetings.

Community Consultation

The Council Plan is the key document that guides all Local Government councils in the work they do for their communities over the four years of a council term.

Cr O'Connor said a recent survey asking residents and community groups what their top ideas were for the shire had resulted in more than 330 responses.

"Given we had three questions per survey, that's well over 1000 individual responses, which is a fantastic return," Cr O'Connor said.

"To me it says our community is more engaged with what Council is doing, and that is always a good outcome. And in light of that, we have extended the original five community meetings in Rutherglen, Chiltern, Beechworth, Kiewa-Tangambalanga and Yackandandah to include Wahgunyah, Barnawartha, Sandy Creek-Kergunyah and Stanley."

These meetings are all scheduled to start at 6pm and will involve a facilitated roundtable discussion of the themes and main topics that have come out of the feedback so far.

"What we are looking for from the community in these meetings will be to check our progress in capturing their ideas. We want to know if we are on the right track and if there are any gaps," Cr O'Connor said.

"But most of all we want the community to tell us what their priorities are. We can't do everything that everyone wants -- that is just not possible. But if the community tells us they want a particular project as their top priority, then we can plan for that."

The feedback and prioritisation will determine the content of the draft Council Plan, which will then go on public display in May for any further comment. The final version will be adopted by Council in June.

Cr O'Connor urged community members to attend one of the meetings from 6pm-7.30pm:

  1. Wednesday 1 March, Wahgunyah School of Arts
  2. Thursday 2 March, Senior Citizens Rutherglen
  3. Monday 6 March, Coulston Park Kiewa-Tangambalanga
