Indigo’s new Deputy Mayor is Cr Sophie Price

Cr Sophie Price, who was elected to Indigo Shire Council in 2016, has tonight been elected Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.

Cr Price, 25, lives in Rutherglen and is a fifth-generation member of her family.

She said she was encouraged and mentored to run for Council last year by members of the community who believed her extensive knowledge and involvement in the community would enhance the work of Council.

"I have always been involved in the community in various ways from sport to parents group to various committees and fundraising in all its forms. It’s how communities run," she said.

"My knowledge of the community means I can be really targeted and effective in connecting people with Council.

"Being a mother of a 2-year-old brings me in touch with young families and all their concerns and with my family living in the area for five generations it means I have that connection to the knowledge and history of longstanding generations," she said.

"I believed I could represent the community when I stood for Council and my feet have literally hit the ground running in the past 12 months.

"I bring a depth and breadth of community experience to the role of Deputy Mayor. And I have watched my fellow Councillors closely over the past year and will take some learnings from this into the role.

"People put me on Council to broaden the way we communicate and engage with the community, to get a wider and more diverse range of views into what we do and I hope to realise this a bit more in my role as the Deputy Mayor."

Mayor Cr Jenny O’Connor said she was delighted with the appointment.

"I very much look forward to working closely with Cr Price over the next year. I am sure she will bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the role," Cr O’Connor said.
