Indigo Shire is looking forward to a big January 26 welcome for Australia Day Ambassadors Stan Alves and Rob Gell.

Stan Alves OAM, former AFL coach, elite athlete and now a successful businessman, will speak at the Australia Day functions at Barnawartha, Kiewa-Tangambalanga and Beechworth.

Rob Gell OAM, a qualified geological and environmental scientist best known as the face of TV weather for more than 30 years, will speak at Rutherglen, Chiltern and Yackandandah.

Stan is widely known from his television and sporting appearances, and has visited Indigo Shire in the past. A gifted motivational speaker in business, sport, education and life, he is dedicated to passing on his knowledge and experiences to others. Stan is a Patron for Hope Bereavement Services Inc, and for Menzies Caring for Kids He is an Ambassador for Whitelion, an organisation supporting Youth at Risk.

Rob has been a local government councillor and was a councillor of the Australian Conservation Foundation through the 1990s. He has been highly active in sustainability, environmental and wildlife organisations for more than 30 years. He is the Patron of the Geography Teachers Association of Victoria, Wildlife Victoria, and Life Education Victoria. He is a Life Ambassador for Australia Day.

Australia Day Events

Australia Day is celebrated each year across Indigo Shire on 26 January with events in Barnawartha, Beechworth, Chiltern, Kiewa-Tangambalanga, Rutherglen and Yackandandah.

Each venue has a flag ceremony and presentation of Indigo Shire Australia Day Awards.

The awards celebrate the contribution of individuals, community organisations and businesses in the Shire. They pay tribute to those who make extraordinary contributions to society or who are outstanding achievers in the Indigo community.

  • Barnawartha 7.30am-9.30am. Community barbecue breakfast, award presentations, Soldiers Memorial Hall, High Street
  • Beechworth Celebrations from 5.30pm. Community barbecue 6pm-7pm, formalities commence 7pm. Town Hall Gardens, Loch Street
  • Chiltern 9.45am-12pm for 10.30am official start. Community morning tea, entertainment and award presentations, Tourist Park, Main Street
  • Kiewa-Tangambalanga 11am-1pm. Community lunch, award presentations and entertainment, Kiewa Memorial Park, Kiewa East Road
  • Rutherglen 7.45am-10am. Community breakfast, entertainment and award presentations, Lions Park, Douglas Street
  • Yackandandah 5.30pm-10pm. Community barbecue, award presentations, entertainment and live music, Sir Isaac Isaacs Park, Isaacs Avenue
