14 events share $26,000 grants

Indigo Shire Council last night endorsed the Indigo Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee's recommendations for the 2017-18 Tourism Event Grants.

A total of 14 events across the shire will share in funding of $26,000.

Indigo Mayor Cr Jenny O'Connor said the 2017-18 budget allocation of $26,000 was significantly over-subscribed with 40 applications totalling $104,000.

"The committee recommended that we allocate the grants across 14 events where applications clearly identified their competencies against the assessment criteria," she said.

"Six events will receive the grant amount requested (up to the maximum of $4,000). Eight events have been recommended an allocation of $1,000 or $500 according to merit against the selection criteria."

Cr O'Connor said the Festivals and Events Sponsorship Program was a vital support for existing events and played an important role in encouraging and supporting new festivals and events in the Shire.

"Applications that did not show substantial alignment with the assessment criteria were unfortunately not successful. This was not necessarily a reflection on the quality of the event, but more a reflection of the over-subscription and the necessity to allocate the available funding at a level where it could contribute to event development."

Cr Jenny O'Connor said conservative economic modelling showed the Shire's festivals contribute turnover of about $17 million to Indigo Shire's economy per year.
