Roadside Weed Initiative Program

For the ninth consecutive year Indigo Shire Council is delivering the Roadside Weed Initiative program.  This program aims to assist landholders with the prevention in the spread of weeds on roadsides adjacent to their property.

In 2010, twenty-two residents participated in the Roadside Weed Initiative, which resulted in targeted weed spraying of over 125km of roadsides.  “It is fantastic to see residents taking ownership of their roadside and looking after it to the same standard as their property” says Team Leader Natural Resource Management Shay Simpson.

While the responsibility for the control of regionally controlled and regionally prohibited weeds on roadsides continues to be debated between the State Government and Local Government, this program strives to work positively with interested landholders and tackle the problem on the ground through provision of an incentive.

The past year has also seen Council been awarded funding from the State to also undertake targeted roadside weed control.  Accordingly, preference will be given to areas and weeds that have not already been treated, as well as to joint applications with adjacent neighbours and to applications that follow up on spraying undertaken last year.

Applications have closed for the 2011 program and are currently being assessed.  Landholders will be advised of their participation in this program by early October.  Any queries regarding this program can be directed to Council’s Team Leader Natural Resource Management on 02 6028 1100.
