Live, work and invest in Indigo Shire

Living in Indigo

The Shire's strategic location near the growing Albury-Wodonga region and the Hume Transport Corridor caters for employment and commercial needs, and its rural nature and closeness to the Victorian snowfields provides access to excellent outdoor sporting and recreational pursuits. The Shire includes towns with substantial populations supporting high quality primary and secondary education, accounting, legal, medical, dental and associated services. There are over 700 separate businesses based in the Shire, including two operations that individually provide employment to more than 1000 people: Murray Goulburn Cooperative Ltd, a major manufacturer of milk, cream and butter products in Tangambalanga; and Uncle Toby's Company Ltd, which manufactures cereals and health food products in Wahgunyah.

It couldn't be a better mix - a great place to live with excellent community facilities, great retail centres, close proximity to major cities and all the chain stores and superb social services. There are first class health services, some of the best primary and secondary schools in the state, tertiary educational facilities nearby and all in the clean green environment of the beautiful North East. There are great employment opportunities in local businesses and regional centres and some great openings for trades and services. Added to all of this are the wonderful recreational attractions, sporting and community groups, and sumptuous food and wine all nestled in the historic villages of the Indigo Shire.

Why should I locate my

business in Indigo?

There are so many reasons why you should locate your business in Indigo Shire. Here's why...

The Shire has a rich mix of historic townships that offer opportunities for new business ideas and investment. As part of the North East Victoria region, the tourism industry is vibrant and robust and experiencing excellent growth in visitor numbers, supporting healthy incomes for business communities. Beechworth and Rutherglen lead the tourism resurgence - Beechworth for its beauty, buildings and place in history, and Rutherglen for its wine and food indulgence on the Murray River plains. Nearby Yackandandah and Chiltern have their own attractive values and unique qualities and are important tourist destinations in their own right. Added to this is Wahgunyah, nestled in the pristine environment of the magnificent Murray River at the northern end of the Shire.

Decisions to invest can be made much easier, knowing the stable tourism inflow into the region. The Shire is a day trip destination for the 100,000 residents of Albury-Wodonga. Many travellers also diverge from the Hume Highway and Great Alpine Road. Of course, not all small business is dependent on tourism. The Shire is a high-value agricultural producer with many associated opportunities, enhanced by major freight rail and Hume Highway infrastructure that passes through the Shire. Council provides statistical support and commercial contacts to help you with planning, and depending on your proposal, may be able to provide incentives and help with your establishment.
