Living in Indigo

It couldn’t be a better mix— a great place to live with an excellent climate, community facilities, great retail centres, and close proximity to major cities. Indigo Shire and the wider North East Region provide first class health services, primary and secondary schools and tertiary educational facilities all in close proximity.

Climate

Indigo Shire has a Mediterranean-style climate with long, hot summers and relatively short, cold winters. The eastern section of the Shire, at the head of the Kiewa and Ovens valley, has relatively high elevation with Beechworth at 580 metres above sea level whereas to the west, Rutherglen is at 169 metres above sea level. The main urban areas are Beechworth, Rutherglen, Yackandandah and Chiltern with smaller communities in Wahgunyah, Tangambalanga, Stanley and Barnawartha.

Public Transport

All towns of the Indigo Shire are well serviced by public transport. As well as the local commuter services running between the towns and the main centres, there are easy links to Melbourne and Sydney.

The Shire straddles the Hume Freeway - the main highway between Melbourne and Sydney - and also the main trunk railway between these two great Australian destinations. Regular rail and coach services run between the shire and the cities as well as commuter links to Albury where the regional airport is serviced by three major airlines.
