Indigo Shire Council's Economic Development Team is committed to the sustainable economic growth of our region.

Indigo Shire Council is a rural Shire located 270km north-east of Melbourne, bordered by the Murray River, Australian Alps and the municipalities of Wodonga, Wangaratta, Towong, Alpine and Moira. The Shire's total area is 2016sq km with an estimated population of 16,111. Recent population growth has been recorded at 1% per annum.

The Shire's largest town is Beechworth with a population of 3227 followed by Rutherglen with 2502, Barnawartha 1207, Chiltern 1063, Wahgunyah 809, Yackandandah 663 and Stanley 609 (Census 2006).The Shire's economy relies on its rural and tourism base and its regional association with Albury-Wodonga and Wangaratta. The Shire is essentially rural in nature with supporting services in small towns. The economy of the Shire is based on farming (beef, sheep, dairy, fruit and viticulture), processing of local primary produce and the provision of services to people, including tourism services.

Council's priority is encouraging sustainable regional growth. Council provides assistance to businesses and industry that want to invest or expand within Indigo Shire and works closely with local businesses to realise their plans for growth. The Council also helps business and industry achieve their goals by promoting the Shire as the preferred location for investment and enterprise development in North East Victoria.
