Tourism Business Information

Tourism contributes $73 million to Indigo Shire's annual economy, supporting more than 4600 jobs (Source: Compelling Economics 2010). It is the fifth biggest industry in the shire behind manufacturing, agriculture, construction and general retail.

Indigo Shire sits within Victoria's High Country and is a key stop on several touring routes including Yarra Valley to High Country route, Great Alpine Road heritage loop, the Ned Kelly Touring Route and the Snowy Valleys Way. The Shire is part of Tourism Australia's National Landscapes program in the Australian Alps region. The Shire's tourist villages are promoted under the key product strengths of history and heritage, food and wine, natural attractions, Ned Kelly country, outdoor activities, festivals and events, and arts.

Indigo Shire has tourism and economic development staff to assist with the growth and support of our tourism industry. These officers can be contacted at the Beechworth office.

Draft Tourism Strategy now on display for public comment

Indigo Shire’s draft Tourism Strategy has been completed and is now on public exhibition.  The Indigo Destination Game Changer 2023 strategy has been developed in consultation with Indigo’s Economic Development & Tourism Advisory Committee, state, regional and local stakeholders and community.  The five year strategy redefines the way tourism will be delivered in Indigo Shire with ambitious and measurable growth objectives for Indigo’s visitor economy.  The strategy will inform the direction of tourism development, visitor servicing and cultural heritage tourism in Indigo.  Council is now inviting comments on this strategy, which can be accessed on Council’s website here, or at any of the Customer Service Centres.

During the exhibition period Council invites you to attend one of the Strategy Drop In sessions listed below.
